Jane Richard, one of hundreds of victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, has been released from hospital. The seven-year-old Irish dancer, from Dorchester, lost her brother Martin in the attack and her mother Denise was also badly injured.

The little Irish dancer spent 39 days in intensive care. She underwent 12 surgeries having lost her leg in the bomb blast.

The Richard family told local news WCVB that Jane was in good spirits and looking forward to the next chapter of her recovery.

A family statement read: “We all shared very emotional goodbyes with the doctors, nurses and staff at Children’s, who have taken such good care of not only Jane, but all of us.”

The continued “Jane’s stay will serve as a bridge to what will be the 'new normal' for Jane and our family going forward.”

A spokesperson said “While we remain devastated over Martin’s death and all that has happened to us, Jane’s determination for getting better is an inspiring source of strength for the entire family.”

The Daily Mail reported the heartbreaking moment when Jane woke up two weeks after the attack and learned that her brother was dead. The family again released a statement which said “difficult questions that needed to be answered.

“There are not words to describe how hard sharing this heartbreaking news was on all of us.”

Richard parents Denise and Bill were both injured in the attacks. Denis sustained head injuries and lost vision in one eye. Bill was hit by shrapnel and has loss of hearing. Their other son Henry was unharmed.

The Richard's horrific story pulled at the heartstrings of the US and further afield and the Irish dance community and Irish American community have been working tireless to raise funds for the family and her recovery.
