A shortlist of names for the new bridge across Dublin's River Liffey has been revealed.

A shortlist of names for the latest bridge across Dublin's River Liffey has been revealed, reports the Irish Independent.

The Dublin City Council's Commemorative Naming Committee shortlisted the 85 nominations to 17 at a meeting earlier this week.

The list includes names from Tony Gregory to Lady Gregory, the Abbey Theatre Bridge to The Returned Home Bridge, Dracula creator Bram Stoker, patriot James Connolly, Strumpet City author James Plunkett, Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, and poet WB Yeats.

Physicist Ernest Walton, Legion of Mary founder Frank Duff, ad esser known figures such as  trade unionist Rosie Hackett and Dublin camogie player Kay Mills are also on the list along with the founder of the Alone organization for the elderly Willie Bermingham and Dr George Sigerson, after whom the GAA Sigerson cup is named.

A campaign is underway to name the bridge after the Abbey Theatre, as it is located behind the building in the city center.

The idea behind the Returned Home bridge is to honor the Irish men and women who fought in World War I.

Along with the 85 official nominations received, the committee received neary 10,000 supporting submissions, including emails, direct correspondence and petitions.

Dublin City Council said it was very grateful for the public’s “enthusiastic response “to the advertisement seeking nominations for the naming of the new bridge over the Liffey at Marlborough Street.

The shortlisted names will be reviewed at the committee's next meeting on June 12. The committee aims to have a decision on the naming of the bridge in autumn 2013. The bridge is scheduled to be completed late this year.

Committee chairman councilor Dermot  Lacey said: ““This process has assisted in bringing to public attention people and events that have made a unique and outstanding contribution to the life and history of Dublin.”
