Double All-Ireland winner Tom Kenny has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling with Cork.

Kenny informed manager Jimmy Barry Murphy of his decision after helping his club Grenagh to the Cork intermediate football title.

A MacCarthy Cup winner in 2004 and 2005, Kenny told the Irish Examiner, “I met Jimmy Barry-Murphy a couple of nights ago and told him. I said all along I’d wait until Grenagh were finished in the championship, and our season ended when we won the intermediate football.

“I’m 32 now and I felt it was time to let other lads come through and have their chance. I’m healthy, it’s not because of injury.

“I’ve had a good innings with Cork, it would have been great to go out with a third All-Ireland medal this year, but it wasn’t to be.”

Rebels boss Barry-Murphy will have to wait until the summer for the return of injured star Paudie O’Sullivan as he recovers from a second operation on a leg break sustained last April.

O’Sullivan revealed, “I had the operation last week. We had hoped that the fibula would heal itself but I had a pain there “I’m just trying to focus on getting right now, but it looks like I won’t play in the National League.”
