Colorado Rapids youngster Shane O’Neill is refusing to rule out an international career with the Republic of Ireland despite joining a World Cup training camp for the United States team under boss Jurgen Klinsmann.

The Cork-born midfielder/defender has been included in a 26-man USA training camp squad along with Chicago’s Irish qualified striker Mike Magee.

O’Neill, son of GAA star Colm, has already played at underage level for the U.S. but can still switch allegiances.

O’Neill said, “I’m not going to rule out any possibilities for sure. It’s just a training camp, and hopefully it’ll just be used as a good way to improve my game for the next couple of weeks.

“I’m going to go there with an open mind. I’m just excited with the text from Jurgen saying I was going to get called in.”

Previously O’Neill has said, “I have to admit, I would love the opportunity to play for Ireland. I represented the U.S. growing up and it was a great honor to play at the under-20 World Cup, but my family would enjoy seeing me wear that green jersey and it would make them very proud.”
