He's always so happy and cheerful when he’s on our late night TV screens here as the star of The Late Late Show on CBS, so why was James Corden looking so glum when he enjoyed a night on the London tiles with One Direction’s Irish star Niall Horan?

The two were caught by the paps entering the exclusive Tape London nightclub on Saturday night. Niall didn’t look too thrilled either, but he’s got no reason to be sad: 1D’s last album for a while, Made in the AM, dropped on Friday and reported brisk sales, though it might be edged out by Justin Bieber’s latest in the race for number one.

Niall’s famed boyband is going on an extended hiatus that could last as long as two years – and possibly permanently – but he’s got plenty of stuff lined up in the meantime. His former GF Ellie Goulding is all keen to resume their work relationship for starters.

“I'm going to write with him. He's a really good guitarist and he's funny, cheeky, really cool. He's been my friend for quite a few years so I'm really up for it,” Goulding told The Sun.

Horan, originally from Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, told The Irish Times that he’ll miss live performances when 1D begins their break early in 2016 – a break, he stressed, and not a breakup.

“That’s the best part of what we do, getting up there and playing, especially when we get nights like that. Of course I’ll miss it,” he said.

Don’t expect to see the 22-year-old teen idol on a tacky reality show during his down time either.

“I can’t ice-skate and I’m not going in the jungle. So no,” he said.

“I’m going on holidays for a while, sitting around doing nathin’. I was thinking about learning a bit of Spanish or something like that, something to keep me going.”
