John Lennon’s lookalike eldest sun Julian had a few hit singles back in the eighties, and he’s shown that he’s equally adept behind a camera too.
Lennon’s photography is currently on show in a London gallery, and it seems the snap that he’s most proud of is one he took in the summer of 2010 of his friend Bono, who spent time recording at Lennon’s home in France with his fellow bandmates in U2.
Lennon asked if he could discreetly shoot some photos of his superstar guests at work and they agreed. He happened upon his perfect picture of Bono after the rest of the band departed.
As Julian tells The Guardian in London, “I was lazing about on the floor and, as I looked up, I saw Bono with the photograph of Dad in the background. I thought, ‘That's what I've been looking for." And so I took the shot.”
He titled the photo “Someone to Look Up To,” and is extremely thrilled with how it turned out. “This is one of the pictures that changed my way of thinking as a photographer. It's a piece of history in many respects. It's a truly appropriate title as far as I'm concerned. Bono is a huge John Lennon fan, and I'm a huge fan of both of them, of course,” Julian said.
John Lennon was only 17 years old when the photo on the wall was taken. “He has a pensive look – he's not giving too much away, but the mind is ticking. And I think the same goes for the emotion on Bono's face: it's almost identical, like a later version of Dad in many respects. Bono has become one of the best in the world at what he does; I'm happy I was able to capture him in such a reflective mood.”
Meanwhile, Bono was front and center at the EDUN fashion show in New York on Sunday with his wife Ali and daughter Jordan. EDUN, the African-based ethical clothing line founded by Bono and Ali a few years back, always attracts a celebrity clientele for its New York shows, and this year was no exception with the likes of supermodels Christy Turlington and Helena Christensen in the front row along with Sting’s wife Trudie Styler.
