When did you move to the U.S.?
“I moved to New York in August of last year. I had been to New York previously and caught the bug. I knew this is where I wanted to end up after college. I’m going to do a very cliché thing and say what everyone says about New York, that it’s magical. And it is.”
When did you know you wanted to work in fashion?
“I started reading fashion essays in magazines like Marie Claire and ELLE when I was in my early teens. I used to sit down and highlight the words and sentences that stood out to me. I finished each essay feeling inspired and excited about what I was reading and thought to myself that I could do this. Fashion captured me. And I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”
You are a fashion writer for the New York Daily News. What’s a typical assignment?
“A typical assignment would be to cover a fashion event going on in Manhattan. I also write about fashion trends and where you can buy them, but Fashion Week is soon approaching so I will be reporting from different shows which means talking to designers and organizers about the collections.”
What’s your advice for those shopping on a budget?
“People are under this illusion that you need big bucks to look stylish. My advice – always buy something that already goes with an item in your wardrobe. You already have the jeans that fit perfectly, the go-to black dress, the top that sits on you just the way you like it. Add to outfits. Mix them up with a statement necklace. And it’s all about the way you wear it.”
What is your favorite trend at the moment?
“Pointy shoes, slouchy black leather pants and neon accessories.”
Tell us a little about the eBay stylist competition that you won.
“The competition required that you upload two looks that you styled of yourself to eBay’s Facebook page. I uploaded matching floral shorts and blazer suit and a punk-rock black and pink ensemble. Once I was selected alongside other winners I had to produce and style our own fashion show in Dublin for eBay Europe. I appeared on Irish television channel TV3 talking about my experience. It was a lot of fun and I learned loads about the styling business.”
How do you think Dublin fashion compares to New York?
“The two are very different. New York is all about comfort and simple, cleaner cuts. New Yorkers are happy in J Brand jeans, a cashmere sweater and a nice watch. Dubliners would wear the same outfit but cut up the jeans, throw on a leather jacket over the sweater and add statement boots. The Irish don’t like things to be too simple. Each is different but equally creative.”
Who are your style icons?
“Alice Dellal, Cara Delevingne, Olsen twins and Sarah Jessica Parker still has it.”
