Drogheda United striker Gary O’Neill says he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received since he announced last week that he is suffering from testicular cancer.

Players from all clubs involved in FAI Cup action over the weekend wore t-shirts proclaiming their support and best wishes for the former Shamrock Rovers and Sporting Fingal star.

The 31-year-old O’Neill said, “The last few days have been some of the most difficult of my life. However, following my diagnosis, I have been overwhelmed by the level of support I have received from the football community and from the public in general.

“In addition to the fantastic support from the PFAI, my club Drogheda United and in particular the club doctor, Dr Conor Kelly, I have been blown away by the offers of assistance, messages of support and general kindness that has come my way from friends, fellow players, supporters, other clubs and people who I’ve never met but want to help.

“It is humbling and genuinely touching to think that so many people care so much and are willing to give their time and good wishes to someone who many don’t even know.”
