The only thing that makes winter bearable is the endless list of awards shows on television. There’s nothing like a poorly-chosen gown on the red carpet, or a slurred thank-you speech, to give us something to tweet about on Monday morning.

This year’s Grammys (February 8, at 8pm on CBS) aren’t as green as usual — I mean, can you really have a World Music category without The Chieftains? — but two major Irish acts are nominated in top categories.

Bray-born heartthrob Hozier’s hit “Take Me to Church” is nominated for Song of the Year. Joining him in that category are Taylor Swift (“Shake it Off”), Meghan Trainor (“All About That Bass”), Sia (“Chandelier”) and Sam Smith (“Stay With Me”).

U2’s Songs of Innocence is nominated in the Best Rock Album category. The Dublin band will face off against Ryan Adams (“Ryan Adams”), Beck (“Morning Phase”), The Black Keys (“Turn Blue”) and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (“Hypnotic Eye”).

Since Grammy voters are used to getting albums for free, it’s unclear whether U2’s free distribution deal with Apple will have ruffled any feathers.

I poured through the list of nominees in other categories, and didn’t notice any other Irish acts, which is too bad. Sinead O’Connor’s I’m Not Bossy (I’m the Boss) would have been an interesting choice in the Alternative Rock Album category, but her highly-publicized spat with Miley Cyrus probably did her more harm than good in the court of public opinion.

Comedian Jim Gaffigan, who hit The New York Times bestseller list with his memoir Dad Is Fat, picked up his second Grammy nomination in the Best Comedy Album category for Obsessed. He was last nominated in 2013 for Jim Gaffigan: Mr. Universe.
