New York All Stars: We’re Ready

NY GAA manager Ian Galvin.

In a Monday morning interview, the New York captain Brendan Quigley and player Ross Wherity were both very confident as they approach what will be both players’ first appearance for New York in the county jersey against Mayo at Gaelic Park on Sunday, May 4.

Both have played for their respective counties in the All-Ireland championship, with Quigley lining out for his native Laois while flying forward Wherity has played for Jim McGuinness' Donegal.

Before he made himself available, Quigley was asked by present Laois manager Tomas O'Flaharta if he would consider rejoining the Laois panel in Ireland. After a winter of gym programs Quigley is firmly in the New York corner.

"The training here was pretty much like home, gym programs and training three nights a week," stated the big midfielder.

When asked if New York would be playing to the strength of the midfield combination of Alan Raftery and the captain he added, "Hopefully we can play to our strengths across the field."

Wherity added, "We need to play a style that they don't want to play too. We are definitely going out to try and win the game. You always do."

That is certainly a breath of fresh air to the New York scene, as for too long the thought of just playing the game prevailed.

Team manager Ian Galvin said, "We are looking forward to playing Mayo. A lot of our players have played at this level before so it will not hold any surprises."

The lack of games in the lead up was again a talking point.

“If we could get the Division 4 winners out here a couple of weeks before our championship game and theirs, it would be a huge help to both us in New York and also to the league champion,” Galvin added.
