The Shannon Gaels Field of Dreams was alive with activity on a recent Saturday when the annual field day took place.

With children from babies to teenagers, and parents friends and acquaintances all enjoying the brilliant sunshine and activities, it was a fantastic day for all.

From the night before tents were being set up with multiple fields being lined out in anticipation of the following day’s games and festivities.

The under-6’s started the day with a thrill a minute for all the proud parents and fans. This continued with various age groups participating in challenge games. The under-8 players were in the Bronx competing in the St. Barnabas 7-a-side tournament, where they were enjoying success with two of the sides reaching their semifinals and narrowly missing out on making the finals.

The under-12 girls played Rockland in a very exciting and close game while the under-12 boys had the inaugural golden boot competition. The skills and technique on show were quite impressive, with Oisin Mathers winning out by the closest of margins in the end.

The under-10 boys competed in an eight a side competition, all played hard and you could see the enjoyment on all their faces -- their smiles demonstrated what the day is all about.

Next up the young Shannon Gael hurlers. There were hurleys, sliothars and helmets flying in all directions, the excitement on the sidelines was evident.

Soon the "older" hurlers took to the field with three generations competing. It was end to end stuff with a man of the match performance given by stalwart Oisin Foy.

The under-14 boys took on the adults in a very one-sided affair (the Feile boys weren't allowed to play as Ireland beckoned!) with some great high fielding by the aged Shane Mulally. Catherine Motherway was also participating proudly in the middle of her hurlers. Congrats to Bubbles and the Tipp hurlers this past weekend as they took the Tribe spoils.

The under-10 girls made their entrance in their unmistakable pink jerseys, and what a game it turned out to be. Coaches Stephanie and Karen have the girls in tip top shape and it showed. The skills and abilities were tremendous.

The final football event of the day was the under-16, under-18 and adults combined teams in a nine a side tournament. The performance of Brefini Smith in goals can't go unmentioned.

The reds won out in the end but there was controversy with the issue of a "black" card and application of the rule. Refs Sean Price and Paddy Kearney showed that Kerry has produced some brilliant players.

Minor manager Kearney played in the semifinal before donning the whistle for the final. The former New York manager led his team to the minor semifinal this past season.

The final event of the evening as the sun began to set was the sheaf throwing competition where Joe Corbett and Liz Kelly won the men and women's competitions.

A brilliant day out in Queens with the Field of Dreams the host for all sports of the Gael as hurling football camogie and the age old sheaf were all presented.

Next up for Shannon Gaels is Croke Park. They will be part of the half time show on August 3 during the All-Ireland football quarterfinal that day.
