Vice President Joe Biden will visit Ireland in the spring/summer of next year and has President Obama’s blessing.
The president was asked by the media after meeting Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Enda Kenny in the White House if Biden would make a trip to Ireland this year. “You know, Biden wants to come to Ireland — he lobbies me every week to go to Ireland. So I guarantee you he’ll get there. He’ll get there.”
Last Thursday night Biden was the guest of honor at the annual American Ireland Fund gala in Washington, DC where Kenny first extended the invitation to Ireland and a round of golf when he gets there. Biden had tongues wagging when he replied, “I don’t know about you, but if you want to keep your handicap in golf, don’t run for president. So I expect strokes when we play.”
Last Friday Biden hosted a breakfast for Kenny and his wife Fionnuala at the vice president’s residence. He also met with Northern Irish leaders Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness.
On Monday, St. Patrick’s Day, Biden visited Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania for the 100th anniversary commemoration of the Greater Pittson Area Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
