Hollywood awards season officially got underway on Saturday night at the Palm Springs International Film Festival gala, and all indications are that the next couple of months will be full of statues for the Irish.

Saoirse Ronan, star of the acclaimed Brooklyn, accepted the International Star Award. Saoirse also presented Carol star Cate Blanchett with the Desert Palm Achievement Award. Those two will likely compete for a Best Actress Oscar at the Academy Awards next month with another Palm Springs winner, Brie Larson, star of Room, based on the book by Irish novelist Emma O’Donoghue.

Michael Fassbender’s star turn as Steve Jobs in the biopic of the same name was also recognized, as Fassbender earned a Palm Springs International Star Award. His co-star, Kate Winslet, told him not to “f*** up” during his acceptance speech and Kerryman Fassbender certainly didn’t. He also joked about Steve Jobs landing at the box office with an almighty thud.

"I believe you have a movie that will stand the test of time," he said to the film’s producers. "Unfortunate about the box-office figures, but thank God for Jurassic World."

Saoirse headed for New York on Monday to collect her Best Actress gong from the New York Film Critics Circle, where she was joined by the likes of Liam Neeson, Susan Sarandon and Kristen Stewart.

The road show moves to Beverly Hills on Sunday for the Golden Globes, and all of the above are nominated.
