Allan Dixon, from Arklow, in Wicklow, is among six people to win Australia’s “Best Job in the World” competition. Chosen from 450,000 entrants worldwide the Irishman has will be paid $92,362 ($100,00 AUD), to work as an “outback adventurer” for six months.
Working in Australia’s Northern Territory, Dixon will spend six months traveling through the outback, meeting locals and discoverings exciting adventures. His new job will start in August 2013.
Speaking to the Irish Mirror Dixon said he was speechless when he heard he had won.
He said “Words can't describe how amazing this whole experience has been.
"I've made some amazing friends. Win or lose it's been a breathtaking experience and I can't wait to see what the future holds."
Winning the role involved Dixon creating a social media campaign to get people around the world to tweet @Austrailia with their messages of support. He also got Irish media on his side an appeared on national radio and TV.
For the past week 18 finalists have been sightseeing and taking on challenges to determine who is best qualified to market Australia to the world.
Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy said he has been blown away by the applicant enthusiasm.
McAvoy said "They have had so much fun over the past week as they experienced some of the best activities Australia has to offer.
"It's been a once-in-a-lifetime experience and they've all embraced it with gusto.
"The successful candidates each demonstrated incredible talent, energy and desire throughout the application process and will, I'm sure, take these positive attributes into the job with them.
"The other real winner is Australia - we've showcased our amazing experiences to the world."
