An Irishman is to be sent to jail in Dubai for having sex in the back of a taxi – after his final appeal against the two month sentence was dismissed.
The 28-year-old McRedmond has claimed he is being made a scapegoat as he prepares to begin life behind bars next week.
The welder told the Irish Sun: “I am disappointed after coming this far and fighting these allegations for so long. I feel they are making an example of us.”
McRedmond and Blake were initially handed three-month sentences last November after being found guilty of having sex in a taxi in May 2012.
They lost their appeal against the terms but did have the sentence reduced to two months at the emirate’s highest court.
The report says recruitment executive Blake was caught straddling McRedmond who had allegedly pulled his jeans down to have sex with her in the back seat of the taxi.
The Cassation Court ruled that the pair were guilty of breaching the Muslim emirate’s strict decency laws and drinking without a licence.
They will both be deported after serving their jail sentence.
Blake told the Irish Sun: “I am devastated by this result and gutted this has been dragging on for a year.
“I cannot wait to get home and start my life now but I am very scared about going to prison as I have heard such bad things about what happens behind bars here.”
The pair also face financial ruin after spending almost $100,000 in their bid to clear their names.
The couple’s defence team produced medical reports in court to prove they did not have sex but judges found against the pair after hearing the taxi driver claims that Blake had offered him ‘a lot of money’ to say they had been kissing but not having sex.
The pair were arrested in May last year after going on a vodka binge at a €40-a-head all-inclusive brunch and booze bash at the Al Murooj Rotana Hotel.
The report says the court heard the taxi driver pulled up next to a police patrol and reported them.
The head of the patrol testified that he saw Blake without any underwear on, gyrating on top of McRedmond.
The policeman said when he confronted them the woman began to cry and said she wanted to go home.
