Police in Dorchester, Boston are investigating the shooting of a Galway man Photo by: Boston Globe

The Irish immigrant murdered in the Dorchester neighborhood over the weekend has been named as Ciaran Conneely, originally from the Aran Islands in Co Galway.

It is believed it was the second attack on the man in recent weeks say locals

The body of the man, believed to in his mid-30s, was discovered on Monday on a quiet street near Adams Corner.

The Boston Herald reports that the Irishman was discovered on Nahant Avenue, suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I looked out, and there was a sheet over the body,” one local woman who asked not to be identified told the Herald.

Neighbors told the paper that the victim was an Irish immigrant who had lived in the area for the past 10 years. Police described him only as a man in his mid-30s.

Police peppered the crime scene with crimestopper leaflets, left in buildings and on car windshields, looking for help from the public.

The Boston Globe reported that the following morning a van drove up to his apartment building and a construction worker rang his doorbell as they apparently did every working day, to pick him up for work. It drove off when there was no answer

Mother of two Noreen Quinn, a 37-year-old who has lived there for seven years, told the Boston Herald that the street is populated by firefighters, police and Irish immigrants. Many of them had attended Sunday’s Irish festival at Adams Corner.

“This is one of the safest parts of Dorchester,” Quinn said. “I woke up to texts and phone calls from friends who had heard about the shooting. Too many people are on edge.”

The dead man is believed to be from the Aran Islands. Local media reports stated that the man worked in construction.

“It’s a little unnerving to think that something like that could happen because we live on a nice street,” said another local who confirmed that he had not heard any gunshots.

The murder was Boston’s 50th so far this year, compared to 55 over the same period in 2010.

A spokesman for the Boston Police Department told the Irish Times that an investigation was ongoing.
