An Irish father-of-two, who was tragically killed in California, was laid to rest on Monday.

Brian McMahon, 46, originally from Caherminane West, Kilfenora, Co Clare died after he was struck by a car as he walked along a street near his home in San Rafael, California, at 7:45 am on October 4th.

The driver of the car called 911 and has co-operated with the investigation. Police reports suggest the driver may have had difficulty seeing the road due to the early morning sun.

McMahon immigrated to California in 1989. He most recently visited Ireland last August with his wife Patricia and sons Luke, 13, and Rory, 11. He had recently established a new business.

A lengthy tribute published in the Marin Independent Journal said that McMahon "truly touched the lives of so many -- young and old alike".

It added: "None were spared from his scathing wit and roguish charms.

"Brian lived life to the fullest -- his humour and zest for life infected and uplifted all who crossed his path. Most of all he was a phenomenon on and off the field and his home was a source of joy for adults and children but first and foremost, he was a devoted husband and proud father and friend to all."

An avid sport fan, “He was never happier than when Clare won the All Ireland hurling final this year.”

He played GAA in the U.S., including appearances for the Young Irelanders in the North American Intermediate Championship and Erin's Isle in the North American Junior Championship.

"As much as he embraced the American way of life, he remained true to his roots and feverishly followed the sporting events back home," friends said.

McMahon was buried on Monday in Noughaval cemetery following a requiem Mass in his local parish church in Kilfenora.
