Con (39) and Elber (36) Twomey, from Meelin, County Cork are no longer in immediate danger following the horrific car crash in Plymouth. The head-on collision claimed the lives of their 16-month-old son Oisin and unborn daughter, who they have named Elber Marie.

The couple had been fighting for their lives but the Derriford Hospital reported that their condition has officially been upgraded from critical to stable. They are both expected to remain in hospital over the coming weeks.

The have spent 29 days in hospital following the head-on collision on 6th July.

Their families have maintained a vigil at their bedsides over the past four weeks.

Police in Britain will clarify next week whether the bodies of Oisin and Elber Marie can be returned to Ireland for burial, the Irish Independent reports,  as the inquest into their death is ongoing. The Devon police are retaining their bodies along with the driver of the other car, Polish taxi driver Marek Wojciechowski (26) who was also killed in the crash.

The police hope that local CCTV footage will help them to establish what caused the tragic crash.
