10-year-old Irish American Sarah Murnaghan is reportedly doing well after her double lung transplant on Wednesday June 12.

Murnaghan made headlines when she and her family had to fight to be placed on the adult waiting list for organ donation. At only 10-years-old, Murnaghan was held to being on the children’s waiting list, despite being at the high end of severity for Cystic Fibrosis.

On Wednesday June 12, the Murnaghan got the news that, after judge’s orders permitting Sarah to be put on the adult waiting list, there was a match for a donation and Sarah was immediately brought into surgery.

On Thursday June 13, Sarah’s underwent the six-hour surgery for her double lung transplant.

The Associated Press reports that following the lengthy surgery, the Murnaghan family released a statement which said, “Her doctors are very pleased with both her progress during the procedure and her prognosis for recovery.”

”The surgeons had no challenges resizing and transplanting the donor lungs - the surgery went smoothly, and Sarah did extremely well.”

“She is in the process of getting settled in the ICU and now her recovery begins. We expect it will be a long road, but we're not going for easy, we're going for possible.”

Sarah's aunt Sharon Ruddock said the donor lungs came in through normal channels as a result of Sarah being placed on the adult donor list. Besides them being adult lungs, no other details are immediately known about the donor.

”It was a direct result of the ruling that allowed her to be put on the adult list,” Ruddock said. “It was not pediatric lungs, she would have never gotten these lungs otherwise.”

With the news of an available donor, Sarah's relatives said they were “beyond excited,” but were “keeping in mind that someone had to lose a family member and they're very aware of that and very appreciative.”

With Sarah’s condition rapidly deteriorating last week, U.S. District Judge Michael Baylson ruled on June 5 that Sarah, as well as 11-year-old Javier Acosta of New York City, should be eligible for adult lungs.

Sarah’s parents had initially tried to appeal for their daughter to be placed on the adult waiting list, but were denied.

Ruddock went on to add that, "If everything goes perfectly, Sarah could be out in a couple of weeks, running down the hall. It could take a couple of months, it could take three weeks."
