Ireland’s oldest woman has died peacefully – at the ripe old age of 108.

Mary Kate Byrne will be buried in her home village of Maganey in County Kildare.

The popular woman, also known as Poppy, was born on August 14th, 1904.

She was honored by the office of Ireland’s President Michael D Higgins as the country’s oldest citizen in 2012.

Reports say that Poppy was often visited by members of her extended family and had a wide network of friends right up to her death.

Last year she told reporters that she kept her mind active by reading a newspaper every day and had remained in good health, despite a daily fry-up.

Poppy put some of her longevity down to avoiding processed foods, biscuits and alcohol.
