Ireland’s first indoor beach launches in midst of heat wave

Checking out Summer Bay indoor beach at Mahon Point

With temperatures in Ireland remaining hot and dry for the past couple of weeks, families have taken to the beaches to cool off. In the midst of this, a new location has become an option for vacationing families seeking to beat the heat - Summer Bay at Mahon Point.

The Sun reports that Summer Bay at Mahon Point in Co. Cork has opened its doors, being the first indoor beach in all of Ireland. With a 1500 sq meter marquee, the attraction boasts many activities for anyone to enjoy, ranging from mini-golf, to volleyball, to bungee trampolines.

Orla O’Neill, the founder of Summer Bay, says that she was struck with the idea “in January, when [she] was looking for a summer event to run.” O’Neill also runs Cork on Ice, a year-round ice rink also at Mahon Point.

O’Neill says that she developed Summer Bay with her children in mind. “I have two sons, Robert, nine, and Andrew, eleven, So I wanted something fun and active for them to enjoy.” She went on to add that she thinks, “Summer Bay at Mahon Point is something everyone, young and old, will enjoy.”

From water-zorbing to zip-lining, there is an abundance of fun activities to do at Summer Bay. A Segway track and a waterslide also complement the attraction. By day’s end, if you feel so inclined, there are also hammocks set up for lounging in.

This attraction may prove to be a welcome relief from the dry heat that the country has been experiencing. With conditions approaching drought levels in many places all over Ireland, people will be seeking comfort away from crowded beaches.

The attraction’s website says that children can be also signed up for summer camps at Summer Bay. Even parents are catered to, with an “outdoor sun deck… fitted with sun chairs and parasols to create a ‘parent paradise’ to enjoy a cool drink or gourmet coffee from the Beach Hut while the kids let their hair down.”

The attraction is scheduled to be open from June 28th until September 1st.
