In her first public comments since George Zimmerman was acquitted of killing Trayvon Martin, Hillary Clinton said that she is praying for Martin’s parents.

Clinton was speaking at the 51st national convention of the historically black sorority Delta Sigma Theta on Tuesday July 16.

In addition to offering her prayers to the Martin family, Clinton said she also prays for "every family who loves someone who is lost to violence."

“No mother, no father, should ever have to fear for their child walking down a street in the United States of America,” Clinton said.

“As we move forward as we must I hope this sisterhood will continue to be a force for justice and understanding,” Clinton told the group on Tuesday.

While Clinton refrained from offering her own personal opinions about the verdict while speaking on Tuesday, the Justice Department has said it's considering whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

Zimmerman’s acquittal in the killing of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin led to protests across the country over the weekend.

Following the verdict, President Obama said, “We are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son.”
