Ireland is set for a Bank Holiday heat wave.

Ireland is set for a Bank Holiday heat wave – with the prospects of a good summer improving by the day.

After a miserable April, weather forecasters say the May holiday weekend will be warm and sunny.

And the Irish Independent reports that it is time to swap the winter boots for the summer sandals.

Harm Luijkx, a forecaster with the State weather service Met Eireann, told the paper that temperatures will rise above average this weekend.

The mercury will rise to 70 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday and Sunday with night time temperatures just 41 degreees, way above the April average.

Luijkx said the northwest of Ireland will be the coolest, just nudging over double-digit figures, while inland areas and the southeast can expect the highest temperatures.

He said: “Much of Ireland will see a mixture of sun and cloud today with mostly dry conditions and the occasional patch of drizzle in the west and southwest, which will also be largely cloudy and dull.

“The best of the sunshine can be expected in Leinster and along the east coast. Monday will be warmer.”

It will remain mild next week but rain is expected in all areas on Tuesday.

The warm weather is expected to boost domestic tourism numbers over the bank holiday weekend with up to a million people expected to travel around the country on breaks.

More than 220,000 passengers are also expected to pass through Dublin Airport, on some 1,500 flights arriving and departing.

The Dublin Airport Authority says the numbers are up slightly from last year.
