The Irish conjoined twins given just a two per cent chance of survival when they were born 22 months ago are ready to take their first steps.

Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf are back home in Cork and ready to walk thanks to the world’s leading prosthetist, Florida based Kevin Carroll.

The miracle twins, born with just one leg each, will be able to walk unaided within a couple of years according to experts after Carroll fitted them with a replacement limb.

Florida specialist Carroll was introduced to Angie and her husband Azzedine by Irish prosthetist Michael Fouhy.

“Kevin was amazed at how mobile they were,” said Angie. “He couldn’t believe their strength and willpower.”

Carroll used a 3D computer scan of the boys’ bodies to create the perfect legs which arrived in Ireland on October 3rd.

“It was very emotional for me when they tried the legs on because sometimes I would forget they had a disability at all,” added their proud mum.

The twins wear their new legs for two hours a day to get used to them.

“The other day they both managed to climb to the top of a really tall slide for older children,” said Angie. “I have given up predicting what they will do next. I think anything is possible with these two!”

Hassan and Hussein, born conjoined from the pelvis to the chest in December 2009, were given just a two per cent chance of survival after their birth.

They then survived a 14 hour operation to separate them at London’s renowned Great Ormond Street hospital four months later.

Proud Mum Angie told the Sunday Mirror: “Every time I see them raising their legs, it’s like watching someone win the Olympics.”

Angie added: “Before they got their legs, I had always bought one pair of shoes for them to share. The first time I bought a pair of shoes for each of them I was so proud. We call the new legs their superhero legs.”

The Benhaffaf twins have amazed their parents and doctors alike since surviving their birth and their life or death surgery when doctors to split their liver, gut, bladder and pelvis.

Mum Angie added: “Their recovery was incredible. They were home from hospital in six weeks instead of six months. One day we heard shouts of joy and saw the boys had crawled to the top of the stairs on their own.

“Their sisters were cheering them on from the top.”
