The first gay couple to be granted civil partnership, Barry Dignam and Hugh Walsh, celebrated in style on Tuesday after their ceremony in Dublin.

Although they are now the sixth gay couple of celebrate their civil partnership Dignam and Walsh are the first to celebrate it so publicly. Last week the couple was featured on Ireland's most watched TV show, "The Late Late Show". They were featured on Ryan Tubridy's morning radio show on the day of their wedding.

When they were invited to kiss at the end of the ceremony a familiar tune broke out. Laughter ensued as the crowd realized that that it was an orchestral version of Abba's "Dancing Queen".

Dignam said that the song was a well kept surprise. He said they decided "just to gay it up".
Although the Irish Times reported that the two men looked like the epitome of cool they said that they were "nervous on the inside".

Walsh said that the media attention had made them even more nervous. He said "The day started with a call from Ryan Tubridy.”

The couple, who've been together for 17 years, said that it makes a huge practical difference to their lives as well as everything else.

Walsh explained "Now if an accident happens and one of us has to go to hospital with the other, that other person’s views will be taken into account . . . We’re now each other’s next of kin…We’re basically just two faces – we are interchangeable with the thousands of gay couples who live in this country and who love each other and who are going to do this.”

He added that the next step in Ireland is full marriage for gay couples.
