Filmmaker Michael Moore posts bail for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange

Controversial filmmaker, Michael Moore has posted $20,000 of his own money to help Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, to get out of jail. He is being held in prison in London on Swedish sex crimes.

The Daily Mail reports that Moore is just one among several “luvvies, lefties and 'internationally renowned' backers" that are helping Assange make bail. Nobel Prize winner and human rights campaigner, Bianca Jagger, has also contributed.

Assange’s bail has been set at £240,000 ($380,000). His release has been delayed while prosecutors appeal the bail decision.

Writing on his website Michael Moore explained why he posted $20,000 of his own money as bail. He said that WikiLeaks had “outed and embarrassed those who have covered up the truth” and it “deserves our thanks.”

Moore said that the Iraq war could have been avoided had WikiLeaks existed at the time. He believes it would have exposed war plans. He also said that flight school instructors training 9/11 conspirators might have reported their suspicions if they knew of a secret document detailing al-Qaida plans to strike the United States.

The filmmakers also sees a link between the Assange’s sex-crime prosecutions and the condemnation of the WikiLeaks. He said “For those of you who think it's wrong to support Julian Assange because of the sexual assault allegations he's being held for, all I ask is that you not be naive about how the government works when it decides to go after its prey.”
