It’s a good thing the FDNY bagpipers are in possession of some medical knowledge as they may well need it themselves after the band plans to play in the New York Parade on Saturday and, immediately after, will fly to Ireland to take part in the Dublin Parade on Sunday.
The FDNY band were determined to play at the New York parade, stating “We have to be here to march for the city’s EMTs and paramedics. That is the most important thing”. However, they were just as determined not to miss the Dublin parade and plan to fit both in during their heroic whirlwind tour.
It will be extremely difficult for the band to get through the St. Patrick’s Day crowds and traffic to the airport at JFK. Band manager, John Manning, has said, “We’re jumping on the bus the second we step off the parade route”.
As if the New York and Dublin parades weren’t exhausting enough, the bagpipers will also play at the Limerick parade on Monday, do a one-on-one performance for President Michael D. Higgins at his Dublin residence on Tuesday and will somehow fit in a wreath-laying ceremony at the 9/11 memorial in Donadea Forest Park and a barbecue on the seafront in Bray.
Dublin Paramedic, Derek O’Rourke has said they also plan on fitting in “the odd Guinness and Jameson whiskey tasting session here and there” NYDailyNews.com reports.
