On June 14, Bono’s worldwide ONE Campaign released videos of new acoustic versions of classic protest songs by U2 and Bruce Springsteen and other famous artists.
The new releases by famous musicians come as part of the ‘agit8’ campaign, a global music initiative featuring more than 50 artists including Mumford and Sons, Ed Sheeran, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
For agit8, musicians have been recording covers of historically famous protest songs in the run up to this month’s G8 Summit which is being held in Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. The initiative aims to force global leaders to take action to end extreme poverty by 2030.
U2 recorded their new acoustic version of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” on a rooftop in NYC last week for agit8, while Bruce Springsteen filmed his performance of “The Promised Land” earlier this week in Camden, north London.
ONE also released Green Day’s “99 Revolutions” as well as Kid Rock’s version of “For What It's Worth.”
Of ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday,’ U2’s lead singer Bono said that it “was written about Troubles in Ireland, but that song means alot to people in conflict zones.”
