Television host, comedian and satirist , Stephen Colbert, will honor the troops returning from Iraq with two special issues of "The Colbert Report", on September 8 and 9.
The episodes have been entitled "Been There: Won That: The Returnification of the American-Do Troopscape." It has been reported that the audience will be made up of service men and women and some will appear via satellite from Iraq, Afghanistan and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
So far guests that have been mentioned include Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. military commander in Iraq, Gen. Ray Odierno.
Last year Gen Odierno famously shaved Colbert's head, on the orders of President Obama, when Colbert broadcast his show from Baghdad. For that show Colbert wore camouflage and sat behind a wall of sandbags, instead of a desk.
"The Colbert Report" has received three nominations for Emmy Awards for its writing and also for the best variety, music or comedy series. The Emmy Awards will take place on August 29.
On Wednesday the last combat brigade, the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, left Iraq under Obama's plan to end combat operations there by Aug. 31. Some 50,000 members will stay another year in what is designated as a noncombat role.
