The Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America Southern Region is hosting the last of seven North American regional Irish dancing championships this weekend in Orlando, Florida. Teachers and Irish dancing families from Texas to Florida and Maryland to Mexico converged upon the J.W. Marriot Grand Lakes starting Thursday evening to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Southern Region's Irish dancing championships.

Friday, solo competitions for children had emotions running high, with boys and girls as young as 6 and up to age 13, dancing reels, slip jigs, treble jigs and hornpipes, with the top 50% in each group going on to perform a contemporary set piece.  A total of nine adjudicators - three for each round - scored and ranked the dancers, and after all results were tabulated, a packed ballroom cheered and clapped and whooped it up.

World Irish Dancing Championship and North American Irish Dancing Championship qualifiers were announced, and placements were called in reverse order, leading to the new Southern Region Irish Dancing Champion for each age group climbing the podium. In the end, seven regional Irish dancing championship titles were defended, with five competitions seeing a shift on the podium with a new regional Irish dancing champion on top.

Congratulations to all the dancers, teachers and families from your friends at Feis America, North America's favorite Irish dancing magazine!  We also send our warmest regards to those who qualified to compete, but were not able to dance because of an injury or other issue - you were sorely missed.
