A sequel to “Snow White and the Huntsman” is on track for release in 2015. Kristen Stewart will return to her role as Snow White.
Universal Pictures chairman Adam Fogelson made the announcement was made at Cinema Con in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
“Snow White and the Huntsman 2” had been planned since the original’s release. After title star Stewart’s affair with married director Rupert Sanders, the sequel was set aside in favor of a spin off that would focus on Chris Hemsworth’s character as the Huntsman and not include Stewart. The studio later returned to its original idea for the sequel.
The sequel currently does not have a director or a writers. Sanders will not direct. David Koepp who worked on “Panic Room” and “Spider-Man” was brought into the project, but he later exited after negotiating his way out of his contract. It is also unknown if Hemsworth or Charlize Theron will appear in the sequel.
Despite these setbacks, Stewart is still excited about the film. In December she told IndieWire about the sequel, “Oh, it’s gonna be f--in’ amazing.”
She said, “No, I’m so excited about it, it’s crazy . . . I’m not allowed [to talk about it]. The other day I said there was a strong possibility that we’re going to make a sequel, and that’s very true, but everyone was like, ‘Whoa, stop talking about it.’ So no, I’m totally not allowed to talk about it.”
“Snow White and the Huntsman” was a modest success in the box office. It received two Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Costume Design at the 85th Academy Awards.
Stewart is back together with her co-star from the Twilight Saga, Robert Pattinson and Sanders is divorced from model Liberty Ross who also played Snow White’s mother in the original film.
