The Libertines front man Peter Doherty

The Libertines will finally return to the stage next week for the Reading and Leeds festivals, to the delight of their loyal fans.

The band's history is tainted in controversy generated by front man Pete Doherty’s drink and drug habits, which created major friction within the band and eventually led to their demise. Despite only having recorded two studio albums, the band had a notable impact in the British charts.

In later years, the band became known for the tumultuous relationship between the two most prominent members of the band, Carl Barât and Doherty.  While they band were still together Doherty was arrested for burgling Barât’s apartment. The pair originally met through Barât’s sister in 1996, and they formed The Strand which eventually became The Libertines.

After Doherty’s several failed rehab stints, the band split in 2004. Fans don’t know what to expect from the band at next week’s festivals, when they will perform their live act together for the first time in six years.
