Matthew McConaughey knew he would regret it if he didn’t take the opportunity to actually strip for his role in the upcoming male-stripper film ‘Magic Mike.’

US Weekly reports that McConaughey, 42, shared with The Advocate that while his striptease in ‘Magic Mike’ was initially included in the film’s script, director Steven Soderbergh left the decision up to McConaughey.

“It wasn't in the script,” McConaughey told The Advocate of his on-screen striptease, “but [director Steven Soderbergh] said in the beginning that if it felt right, I could strip at the end of the movie.”

"I said, 'I gotta dance, man.' I would regret it for the rest of my life if I was in a male stripper movie and didn't get up there and strip myself."

In the film, McConaughey will be joining other Hollywood hotties, Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, and Matt Bomer as male strippers. McConaughey plays Dallas - a role perfectly suited for the proud Texan - who emcees at the male strip club and joins in on a few dance numbers as well.

McConaughey chose his song for his striptease and got it cleared early within production, allowing him to perfect his choreography which he worked on “two, three nights a week.”

“It was a ball,” he said of preparing for his scenes.

Just as much work went into his steamy choreography as went into his wardrobe design, or lack thereof. Said McConaughey, “It’s a great thong. We took a lot of time designing it because the thong’s your armor, man. It’s your sword. Well, I guess it’s really the sheath for the sword.”

McConaughey is clearly ripped to shreds for the film as well. He says, “Everybody was pretty damn ripped already, but boy, if you really want to get men in great shape, just tell them they're going to play male strippers in a movie and have their sh-t onscreen for the rest of time. Vanity, baby."

He adds proudly that there was no stunt-double for him in the film: “That's all me up there; I don't need a stunt ass."

While stripping was initially “scary as hell” for McConaughey, he admits that "it became like a drug, and I couldn't wait to do it again. Look, I love to dance, but I've never been a stripper. Channing's one of the best hip-hop street dancers I've ever seen, and I didn’t want to challenge his style, so I worked on my own strengths.”

While letting his strengths shine through in the striptease, McConaughey added that “I also knew that my dance had to be the dirtiest. It had to be wonderfully filthy."

‘Magic Mike’ hits theaters June 29.
