“Philomena”, the highly acclaimed movie which tells the tale of unwed mother Philomena Lee and her 50-year-long search for her son, has been nominated in three categories for the 2014 Golden Globes.

Dame Judi Dench, who plays the title role, is nominated for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama award and Jeff Pope and Steve Coogan are nominated in the category of Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture and the movies is also up for the Best Motion Picture Drama award.

The fact that a smaller production, such as “Philomena”, has been nominated for so many awards has taken the media by surprise. However it was the big hitting popular TV shows and high-profile movies that dominated the list.

This year's nominations are riddled with British talent, including Dame Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen. BBC America also earned three nominations for Idris Elba in "Luther," Helena Bonham Carter in “Burton and Taylor”, and Tatiana Maslany in “Orphan Black.” Elba was also nominated for “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.”

“American Hustle”, featuring an all star cast including Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence, came out at the head of the league with four nominations. “12 Years a Slave” starring Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt also dominated the list.
