Gabriel Byrne returns to HBO with the third season of “In Treatment” which promises to be the darkest season to date.

The show tells follows the week to week life of 53-year-old Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne) and his weekly sessions with patients, including one with his own therapist at the end of the week.

This season promises to be a change from the preview two. The show itself is based on an Israeli drama and until this point it followed the Israeli story lines. Now the show is going out on its own.

Executive producers Anya Epstein and Dan Futterman have come up with new stories and impressive talents including Oscar nominees Debra Winger (“Terms of Endearment”) and Amy Ryan (“Gone Baby Gone”), and Irrfan Khan (“Slumdog Millionaire”).

Byrne’s character is confronted with a new therapist. Although he expected her to just write up a new prescript for Ambien she has a few questions first. Of course he many issues start to become apparent quickly. He is in a relationship with a woman 20 years his junior, he is still grieving for the end of his marriage and he is frustrated by his patients.

The show will air on Mondays and Tuesdays at 9pm on HBO.
