The wildly popular Millennium Trilogy novels by the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson, who died in 2004 before he became such a celebrated (and rich) publishing phenom, could be joined by book number four in the series according to a Larsson confidante – who also says that the tome, if it ever comes to pass, is partly set in Ireland.

Kurdo Baksi, a friend of the author who was pushing his new book Stieg Larsson My Friend at the Edinburgh International Book Festival a couple of weeks back, says that the fourth novel is 70% complete and is set “between Ireland, Sweden and the U.S.”

“It is at 270 pages at the moment,” Baksi said, adding that the book heavily focuses on the twin sister of main character Lisbeth Salander.

But will it actually be published? Given the money involved it probably will, but there are problems.

Larsson’s long-term partner Eva Gabrielsson has possession of the manuscript, and she says that it’s not nearly as complete as Baksi claims.  And who would finish the book is another quandary.

Biggest hurdle of all? Gabrielsson was left out of Larsson’s will because they weren’t married, though they were together for more than 30 years, and all the millions from his books went to his father and brother instead.  She says she won’t part with the unfinished script until the rights for Larsson’s books revert back to her.

In the meantime, the first Hollywood movie based on the Millennium books, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, opens in December. Starring as Lisbeth is Rooney Mara, who’s deeply Irish through both her NFL team-owning families.  Her great uncle Dan Rooney is the current U.S. ambassador to Ireland and owner/chairman of the Pittsburgh Steelers who also founded the Ireland Funds global charity.
