Irish American comedian Des Bishop has been forced to cancel performances of his latest tour after his terminally ill father took “a turn for the worse.”

A spokesperson for the Pavilion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, where Bishop was scheduled to perform this week, announced that the shows had been postponed, as Mike Bishop had become seriously ill.

“Des’ dad has taken a turn for the worse. He is flying back to America now. We are hoping the show might be able to go on again later in the year but for now we are giving a full refund for all tickets,“ the spokesperson said.

Bishop has been performing his latest hit show entitled “My Dad Was Nearly James Bond.”  The show charts the journey of his father’s colorful life as an actor and model.  The comedian’s father Mike made a cameo appearance each night of the show’s run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last August.

The New York comedian had long desired to tell the life story of his father and finally made the decision to bring his show to the stage last year after Mike was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The show was inspired by the early career of Mike Bishop, who had worked as an actor in the 1960s and narrowly missed out on landing the role of James Bond.

Bishop told the RTE Guide the show dealt with his father’s regrets. “It’s a story about my dad regretting what might have been all his life, and me not being that crazy about those regrets. He brought me and my two brothers up to be successful men, but maybe he was thinking there was some greater achievement he lost out on,” Bishop said.

“I wanted to do something about that but I never knew how to do it. Then my dad got sick and those regrets, the things that were going to drive the original idea for the show, well, he dismissed them outright.”

Bishop’s brother Aidan has set up a Facebook tribute page to his father which can be seen here.
