A Dublin man who raped his 65-year-old mother on Mother’s Day has been sentenced to 15 years in jail.

Mr Justice Barry White described the case as one of the most horrendous, if not the most horrendous rape case he has ever encountered in his career, reports the Irish Examiner.

The attack happened at around 11pm on Mother’s Day 2008, when the 45-year-old man called over to his mothers house, made vodka drinks, put on a Joe Dolan CD and then raped her.

During the trial the mother said: “When I realized what was happening I said leave me alone. I kept saying leave me alone.”

The accused has maintained that the sex was consensual and that one thing had 'led to another.'

The victim, who was on several prescribed medications at the time of the attack, told the jury that she thinks she blacked out during the attack.

On Monday, the court heard the accused fled to the UK after he was charged. He had a previous conviction for killing a woman.

The 45-year-old has been remanded in custody since his conviction last July at the Central Criminal Court. The judge imposed a 15 year sentence with two and a half years suspended.
