The victim of a serial child sex abuser has spoken about how her wedding day was ruined when her attacker showed up as an unwelcome guest and refused to leave.
Peter Corcoran of Dunmore, Falcarragh, Co. Donegal was sentenced to 12 years behind bars after spending almost half his life sexually abusing seven children.
After his sentencing one of his victims has spoken about how her wedding day was ruined when Corcoran crashed the happy event.
“He stayed for the whole day, he sat at the reserved family table beside my nieces and nephews,” his victim, who did not reveal her identity, told Highland Radio.
“It was just a disaster, it was very tough.”
“It scars you for life, it never ever leaves you.”
From 1984 to 2000, Corcoran forced countless horrific sexual acts on younger children in his community where he worked as a farmer.
Corcoran was charged with 183 counts related to the years of molestation but prosecution was difficult due to the fact the aggressor was a child himself while committing some of the heinous crimes. Corcoran eventually pleaded guilty to 15 counts of indecent assault, sexual assault and rape.
Mr. Justice Paul Carney said that the appropriate sentence was 15 years but suspended the last three years on the condition that Corcoran would keep away from the victims for the rest of his dismal life.
Another victim spoke about the impact the abuse had on his life, “I didn’t think anyone would believe a child,”
He added, “I used to cry myself to sleep. I always felt dirty and still do to this day.”
