Deputy Irish leader Eamon Gilmore is in New York this week to attend the United Nations General Assembly. As part of his foreign mission he met with Dr Richard Haass, the newly appointed peace envoy to Northern Ireland on Friday.
Speaking after the meeting Gilmore said they were committed to making progress on the major difficulties.
"Dr Haass and his team have the full support of the Irish government in the task that lies ahead," he said.
He added: "I was very glad to hear first hand from Dr Haass his considered view on the talks process which began last week in Belfast, and to get his assessment of the way forward.”
On Friday morning the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs & Trade took part in a live Twitter chat moderated by Irish business woman Margaret Molloy from the Consulate General offices on Park Avenue.
During the Twitter exchange the Labour leader answered questions on an array of topics including the Irish economy, immigration reform and the tourism initiative The Gathering.
