Return of the rogue: Sassy 'breath of fresh air' Sarah Palin

The last time I mentioned Sarah Palin in this pastoral kind of patch it was at the direct request of our beloved editor. Hacks of my generation tend to do what editors request, so I produced.

I said, in synopsis, that because she was sassy and a breath of fresh air on the political scene, and since she had gorgeous eyes and legs, that I would be tempted to cross party lines here in Ireland and vote for her election to the local town council. She would be a bit of craic at that level.

I added, however, that she was a Calamity Jane kind of character, not the sharpest tool in the political box, and that I would never vote for her at any level much above the local council. And I concluded, again in synopsis, that I could not believe America would consider putting her an aged colleague's heartbeat away from being the most powerful woman in the world. Or words to that effect.

This was directly following her selection as John McCain's running mate. As we thankfully now  know that did not lead to anything.

What I clearly remember afterwards was the very considerable reader reaction to my piece. Over here we tend to believe that Irish America strongly supports the Democrats.

That was largely borne out in the reaction, but I was surprised there was a quite significant segment of support expressed for Palin and

McCain. There are Irish and Irish American members of the Republican Party reading the Irish Voice too, and some of them were quite  angry with me for saying what I did.

Okay, I enjoyed all the reaction, and in a few weeks after Barack Obama's election it is fair to say I forgot all about Sarah Palin from Alaska.

And dammit, the Irish Voice editor mentioned her name to me again last  week.

"Is she not  back in Alaska  again murdering moose?" is what I said.

"No,” says Debbie. "She has written a memoir called 'Going Rogue' and she is on a promotional tour for it all through the country at the moment. More than that, I'll have you know that she is the most popular speaker the Republicans have at the moment, she's drawing huge crowds.

“And there is even the emerging suggestion that this might even be her opening shots in a campaign to run for president in 2012. She has not said that herself, but there are some other people saying it. She's very much in the headlines again. Will you write your reaction to that for me?"

Hacks of my generation tend to do what editors request...

I pursued Sarah into the churning surf of the Internet, and dammit I finally caught up with her  in a place called Grand Rapids, Michigan, courtesy of an excellent reporter called Kevin Connolly (has to be Irish!) who was covering her book promotional tour.

I even saw a video clip of her in action in Grand Rapids, and in all fairness she is looking well. She was a lady in red on the night, her lower lip was glossier than ever, her eyes were bright, and the brief glimpse I caught of her legs was very satisfactory indeed.

To Debmarie: No...Palin is not honest. She has contradicted herself on many occasions & her recent book & interviews are exposing her. And her record in Alaska is that of a "quitter", abandoning her post after two years. And what christian principles are you speaking of...the prayer in her "church" to keep witches at bay? She makes fast decisions??? It took her months to finally inform us of what periodicals she reads. Yes, you're right, she would have made a quick decision on the Ft. Hood massacre and would have had a 50-50 chance of being right rather that waiting for the evidence...and when you say "we love her" are you speaking for the 29% of republicans who favor her?...leaving approximately 70% that do not? She's unpopular with women...statistics prove that that includes 1/2 of republican women. The Commander-in-Chief is in charge of the "commander" on the ground and it is he that must ensure that there is a strategy that leads to a viable conclusion, & that includes looking at all angles, not just an increase in troops. Sarah Palin has offered no ideas of her own or detailed critiques of those she disagrees with.
I voted for the Democratic ticket in the presidential election because eight years of Republican rule left America in the toilet, our dollar sinking, our jobs sent overseas so big business could reap greater profits, and our infrastructure collapsing. HOWEVER---after eleven months of Democratic rule and trying to sift through all the double talk of the stimulus bills and health care etc., I took out my old copy of "MEIN KAMPF" and am seeing it as a guide for the present administrations policies. I don't know if Sarah Palin would be a good President, but I do believe this country is on the brink of a civil war, and we better get our collective behinds together and stand up for our constitution or our freedoms will no longer be available to us.
Mr. Macconnell....you don't realize that the old democrats are no longer in charge....these new ones are not about "the people"...they are all about big government, and enslaving the little people so that they (govt)have more control....Sarah, while not a "silver tongued devil" like Obama, is HONEST, and her record in Alaska as a true decision maker and leader speaks for itself, as do her principles....Christian - a real Christian. She isn't perfect, nor is her family, whose is? But she is the real thing....and I guarantee you....she wouldn't have taken 3 months to make a decision on Afghanistan after her own commander told her what was needed....nor would she bow to leaders, nor would she say "don't jump to conclusions" on the Ft. Hood massacre....she would call a spade a spade........and that is why we love her. She is real.
She is an airhead just like one of my sisters.
I AREE WITH THE NEXT COMMENT. I CAN'T SEE HOW YOU COULD THINK WE ARE BETTER OFF WITH BARACK OBAMA AS OUR PRESIDENT.
Mr. MacConnell, you seem like a nice man, but we do not write about Irish politics, and you should not write about American politics--you do not understand them, nor the American people.
