Has Simon Cowell lost the run of himself?
His 50th birthday bash last night was the kind of excessive self-loving affair that will raise eyebrows and spread belief that the $100 million man a year has begun to lose the plot.
There weren't so many A-list names there. No Susan Boyle for instance, no Elton John as promised. Only Naomi Campbell - remember her? and Kevin Spacey - remember him?
And someone called Sir Philip Green who we have never heard of on this side of the Atlantic.
Phil is pictured in the Daily Mail, as a quite old and quite small man dwarfed by a massive and beautiful female model.
The rest it seems were a collection of the usual Brit glitterati. The Daily Mail says Simon was "tearing his hair out" over the guest list right to the last moment
The party was for 400 guests at a stately manor in Hertfordshire and Simon no doubt enjoyed being Lord of the Manor.
Waiters wore Simon Cowell masks and partygoers we're surrounded by posters of Cowell including in the ladies room
Sadly his ego appears to be getting the better of him.
Consider the 3,500-word paean of praise to himself he wrote for the Daily Mail in honor of his
50th.
It took the form of a letter from his present day self to his younger self who struggled mightily to make it in showbiz.
Remember this is a guy without an obvious talent , no musical ability or great literary work in his past. He's a purveyor of talent, a showman and a shaman. He's good at what he does but he's not half as great as he thinks he is.
The letter in the Daily Mail is extraordinary.
The Guardian called it "a bizarre letter to himself."
"Next week you are throwing a fabulous party...you are tremendously excited about this party' Simon writes to himself.
"When you were a small boy you remember seeing the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton at parties. and what you remember most vividly is that you wanted to be at that party You wanted to join in. Well this time the party is all yours."
There is much more in that vein.
Oh dear, it seems Simon's ego has landed and we are seeing the real Gatsby side of the impresario.
I'm afraid small Sir Philip and tall Naomi don't cut it like Liz Taylor and Richard Burton do. It's simple Simon.
You are a fleeting star in a very wide and large horizon. Enjoy your moment but don't mistake it for anything else.
