Archbishop of New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan has described the new bishop of Camden, Bishop Denis Sullivan, as one of the “finest bishops” he knows.

A former Larchmont pastor, Bishop Sullivan was named Tuesday by the pope to become bishop of Camden, New Jersey. He has served as a vicar general of the Archdiocese of New York since 2004.

“Since my arrival in New York nearly four years ago, Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan has been an invaluable help to me, as my predecessor, Cardinal Edward Egan, predicted he would,” Cardinal Dolan said in a statement.”

Bishop Sullivan (67) is a Bronx native and has played an integral role in major planning initiatives for the New York archdiocese.

“His many years of service on the Lower East Side of Manhattan have given him a special closeness and dedication to the immigrant community, particularly the Latino and Asian population, who continue to be a vital and vibrant part of the Church in New York,” Dolan added.

In Camden he will replace Bishop Joseph Galante, who is retiring early because of health issues.
