Calling all Elves!

The New York Irish Center is thrilled to announce that their Irish Shoe-box Toy Factory is re-opening its doors at the New York Irish Center on Sat, Dec 14 2013, between 12 noon and 5pm. They’re seeking elves to help pack shoe-box gifts for families and children still feeling the harsh after-effects of Hurricane Sandy one year later.

Born out of a necessity in response to Hurricane Sandy and the kindness and generosity of volunteers, the first Shoe-box Toy Factory opened on the second Irish day of action in the gym of PS104 in the heart of the far Rockaway community Queens Sat, Dec 15 2012. In a short time 40 ‘elves’ packed, wrapped, and stacked nearly 700 shoe-box gifts, that were distributed to the children and families severely displaced in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Following on from 2012, the hardship of Hurricane Sandy is still felt for many families’ especially as we approach the holidays. The Irish day of action community will continue and try ease the burden of this year by reopening our Shoe box Toy Factory on Sat, Dec 14 2013 at the New York Irish Center (NYIC).

NYIC work alongside the Irish Consulate who have helped in facilitating the arrangements with Habitat for Humanity, in Westchester continue to work tirelessly to help families rebuild their lives.

Habitat for Humanity with receives our shoe-box gifts and distribute them to families and children before the holidays.  The Padded Wagon, moving service will very kindly volunteer to collect and deliver the shoeboxes to Westchester.

On the 14th the day of the factory our wonderful neighbors and friends at, PJ Leahy’s will very generously donate lunch to all our hard working elves.

Please come along on Saturday 14th December to the New York Irish Center between 12.00pm -05.00pm become an elf for the day and help continue and bring a little holiday cheer to young families who are in challenging times following Sandy, this time of year can carry unwelcome pressure, so let’s work together and try and ease the burden.
