Ireland rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll and his actress wife Amy Huberman have put sporting glory before Britain’s Royal wedding.

The Irish centre has turned down an invitation to Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton in London at the end of the month.

Huberman had already bought the big dress for the Royal nuptials but was forced to write a letter of apology to Buckingham Palace after Leinster’s win over Leicester on Saturday.

O’Driscoll will now face down the mighty French side Toulouse in the Heineken Cup semi-final at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium as Middleton is walking up the aisle in London.

And Huberman will be watching her man from the stands as Leinster look to take another step towards a second European Cup win in three years.

The pair, dubbed Ireland’s Posh and Becks, are amongst 1,900 people invited to the biggest Royal wedding since Charles married Diana.

But Leinster’s thrilling quarter-final win over the Leicester Tigers in Dublin on Saturday has put paid to their Royal plans.

“We won’t be going because rugby takes precedence over everything,” said O’Driscoll.

“It’s a shame. Myself and Amy were talking about how it would have been lovely.”

O’Driscoll, who became friendly with Prince William during the Lions tour to New Zealand in 2005, understood the decision.

“Amy is okay about it. It’s not as if she wasn’t able to get out of bed this morning,” laughed O’Driscoll.

“Did she have a dress? I’m sure she had been planning but I didn’t really want to know because I didn’t want to pre-empt anything.”
