Bono has said he is "a very proud American on 9/11", as the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks approaches.

Speaking on the red carpet during the premiere of a new U2 documentary “From the Sky Down”, which opened on Thursday at the Toronto Film Festival, the star described the terrorist attacks as a “big a moment in all our lives.”

“Even if you're not American, everyone became an American that day," he said.

The U2 front man was joined by guitarist The Edge for the Canadian premiere, which chronicles the recording of their 1991 album Achtung Baby.

“Making Achtung Baby was the reason why we are all still here now, “ Bono admits during the film’s trailer.

Speaking about the new film, Thom Power, festival documentary programmer said: "The documentary allowed the bands to be reflective on difficult periods in their careers in a meaningful way. With hindsight, looking back 20 years, people are more candid and willing to talk about the troubled times and the good times. And that's certainly the case in From The Sky Down."

The Irish rock legend will be in New York on Sunday with his wife Ali Hewson for the launch of a new men’s collection for their EDUN line.
