Andrew Grene will be buried today.

The funeral will take place today of Andrew Grene, the respected Irish UN worker who died in the Haiti earthquake earlier this month.

Grene will be buried beside his father in Belturbet, County Cavan, RTE reported.

The 44-year-old had already held postings in Africa and East Timor. He had specifically requested the Haiti position, believing he could help the people there, according to RTE.

In Haiti he worked as a special assistant to the head of the UN mission. 84 UN employees died in the earthquake, which has killed up to 200,000 people.

Grene was the son of a renowned translator and philology professor at the University of Chicago, David Grene. He was born in the US but grew up in Cavan, and before working for the UN had been a journalist.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, two sons, Patrick and Alexander, and a daughter Rosamund.

A charity has been set up in his memory.
