Temperatures for 2011 were up by 1C on average last year, but not during the summer months, according to Met Eireann, Ireland’s weather service.

Three weather stations in Dublin, Westmeath, and Cork, recorded the highest annual temperature in over five to seven years. However, both Mayo and Cork airport recorded their lowest annual maximum since the 1960s.

The hottest day of the year was June 3, with 26C (78.8F) recorded at Drumconnick in Co Cavan and Chanterlands, Athy, Co Kildare.

June 3, 2011 was also the sunniest day of the year with 15.9 hours of sunlight recorded at Casement Aerodrome in west Dublin.

The hottest autumn day since 1906 was recorded in Dublin’s Phoenix Park on September 28, with scorching temperatures of 25.7C (78.3F).

The coldest day of the year occurred on January 29, when a temperature of minus 8.3C (17F) was recorded at Thomastown, Mt Juliet, Co Kilkenny.

The majority of weather stations reported that February and October were the wettest months and March was the driest.

The highest daily October rainfall was recorded on October 24 at Casement Aerodrome, breaking all records since the station opened in 1964.

The annual record for rainfall occurred in Carlow on November 11, when more than 11.5cm (4.5in) fell in one day.
