Results of the autopsy on the body of Irish soccer fan James Nolan, who was recovered from a river in Bydgoszcz, Poland, have revealed that the Wicklow man died of accidental causes due to drowning.

Prosecutor Wlodzimierz Marszalkowski told the Associated Press there were no signs of any other injuries that would suggest foul play.

“There is no other hypothesis than an accident,” he said. “There are no doubts, no circumstances to suggest otherwise.”

The 21-year-old student from Blessington was last seen by his friends in the early hours of last Sunday morning while they were celebrating in the northern Polish city. The group was travelling in Poland en route to the UEFA European Championship in Poznan.

On Wednesday, a body was recovered from the Brda river and later identified as the Irishman.

The tragedy has been met with an outpouring of sympathy in Poland and in Ireland.

“I’m so sad about this. I understand this was a wonderful young man. It’s so distressing for his Dad and Mam and for the family ... As the Tánaiste said, the Government on behalf of all the people offer our genuine and sincere sympathy and consolation to the Nolan family," said Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny.

Some of Nolan’s family are in Poland, but it is unsure when his remains will return to Ireland.
