A statement released by the newly appointed receiver, Ernst & Young, announced that Ashford Castle hotel has been placed into receivership.

The medieval castle, turned five star luxury hotel, is located near Cong on the Mayo Galway border. It is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World organization.

The hotel became famous in 1951 when John Ford filmed much of the classic movie “The Quiet Man”, starring Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne, in the grounds of the castle. Every year “The Quiet Man” fan club meets at the hotel.

The statement, released by Ernst & Young said, “The hotel is recognized as one of the leading hotels in Europe and the purpose of the appointment is to ensure that the operations of the hotel continue without any interruption to guests, staff and suppliers.”

Ernst & Young will now access the necessary funding to maintain and, if necessary, enhance the current high standards of the hotel, according to the Business Post.

“It is the receivers’ intention that the hotel continues to trade as a going concern for the foreseeable future. In this regard it will be business as normal with all employment being maintained, suppliers being retained, and full commitment to the scheduled Christmas programme for the hotel,” it said.

Luke Charleton and David Hughes of Ernst & Young have been appointed as joint receivers to the Mayo hotel.
